Places of interest to visit in Limassol (Lemesos)
- The Amathus Archaeological Site is a 15-20 minute walk from the Mediterranean Beach Hotel heading eastwards. You can take the footpath along the beach and will then have to cross over the road above you. The site is open daily from 9am-7.30pm. Excavations reveal parts of the Agora (the ancient market place) as well as parts of the ancient city-kingdom of Acropolis.
- The Limassol district Archaelogical Museum is situated in the town centre and is open from 9am-5pm during the week and 10am-1pm on Saturdays. An interesting collection of antiquities are housed here, discovered in the Limassol area dating from the Neolithic Age or Stone Age (3000 BC) to the Roman Period (330 AD).
- Limassol Mediaeval Castle (14th centuary) is situated in the old town near the old Port and is open Monday to Saturday 9am-5pm and 10am-1pm on Sundays. It includes a Museum. The Lanitis Carob Mill is worth visiting, behind the castle, and there is a selection of restaurants and cafes in the area which are recommended. You may also wish to take a ride on the Time Elevator simulator inside the Carob Mill which takes you on a journey on the history and culture of Cyprus beginning 8500 BC to the present day.
- Kolossi Mediaeval Castle is situated 14km west of Limassol and is open daily from 9am-7.30pm. This military castle was originally constructed in the 13th century and then rebuilt in the middle of the 15th century after being destroyed in a Geonese attack.
- Curium (Kourion) Archaeological Site lies 19km west of Limassol and is open daily from 8am-7.30pm. Kourion was an ancient city-kingdom and excavations reveal private Roman villas, a public recreation centre, a complex of baths and 5th century AD mosaics. The Graeco-Roman amphitheatre was originally built in the 2nd century BC and is now fully restored and used for
theatrical and musical events every year.
Places of interest to visit in Paphos (Pafos):
- The Tombs of the Kings are situated in Paphos - a town located on the southwestern coast of the island and a drive of around 40-45 minutes from Limassol. The Tombs of the Kings site is open daily from 8.30am-7.30pm. These underground tombs date back to the 4th century BC where high officials from the Ptolemaic aristocracy were buried. Some of the tombs are decorated with Doric pillars
- Beautiful Mosaics can be seen in the House of Dionysos, the House of Theseus & the House of Aion near the Paphos harbour. These impressive mosaic floors in the noblemens' villas date from 3rd - 5th century AD and depict scenes from Greek mythology. The site is open daily from 8am-7.30pm
Places of interest to visit in the Troodos Mountain Region:
- Kykkos Byzantine Church & Monastery is situated in the Troodos mountain range and is open daily from 10am-6pm (a drive of about an hour & a half from Limassol). The monastery was founded in 1100 AD. Kykko Museum houses a vast collection of ancient icons, consecrated vessels and Cypriot antiquities
A formal dress code is required to enter the monastery grounds
